Edmund Joseph is a multidisciplinary artist based in Manchester, UK. Originally born in St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), he spent his childhood in Nassau Bahamas, lived for 6 years in the U.S. and currently calls Manchester home. He got into performing around eight years ago through traditional theatre, but is currently exploring how contemporary theatre and performance art can be used to critique society through practice-research. After graduating with a BA Hons. in Drama at the University of Manchester, he is currently studying for an MFA Performance at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Artist Statement
Edmund Joseph’s work sits at the intersection of multiple cultures, perspectives, and disciplines. This plurality shapes his approach to performance as both artform and inquiry. He aims to make work that is inviting and accessible on the surface, yet layered with ideas, that quietly challenges perceptions or opens the floor for inquiry. His work questions social norms and hierarchies by bringing the audience into the encounter.
Edmund is committed to exploring the value of communal spaces and shared human experiences. This has driven him to a focus on rave-based performances combining text and intensive chorography. His work is immersive, durational, and auto-biographical and combines these to explore identity. Dance, music, rhythm, visuals and multi-media are used as an interdisciplinary vessel to deliver his artwork. He often draws from verbatim and found material, reworking fiction and fact, the personal and the political.
