About

What to expect from "Out of Body"?

There’s gonna be music. There’s gonna be lighting. There’s gonna be visuals. There’s gonna be adrenaline. Expect a durational performance. Expect immersion. Expect dancing. Expect a good night out. Out of Body explores the meaning of a rave, by centring the experience around a few real-life individuals and their stories, featuring verbatim interviews about rave culture. The project asks what do raves do? Why do we dance, how do we dance and who do we dance with? Be prepared for Baz Luhrmann-esque ads for raves (think his work on Sunscreen) and be prepared to join the performer on the dance floor. Will you be the last one dancing when the lights come back on?

Out of Body draws from a range of sources including film, music and popular culture. Inspiration for character development is taken from the film Human Traffic. Real-life rave footage complements the performance, taking visual inspiration from Danny Boyle's film style. Further subliminal elements exploring performance, endurance and survival are inspired by Birdman and They Shoot Horses Don’t They. Out of Body also explores the pressure of putting a performance together, as we watch a performer struggle to keep up with a relentless beat and the tense tussle between dancer and DJ.

Content Warnings: Flashing lights, loud music, claustrophic.
